Hi all,
I took the Midget up to my nephews 2nd birthday party yesterday. It was
a great ride up, though I got a little sunburnt. Then, thinks kinda
started to fall apart, so to speak. As I pulled into my brother's
driveway, I heard thunder! Uh-oh, gotta put the top up. I had fitted my
Norristown top cover this morning, and removing it one of the snaps
pulled out of the old vinyl. Oops. But the top was up and kept the
interior dry.
I took my brother, and then my mother out on a drive in the car. On one
of the drives, the brake pedal pad slipped off the pedal. Oh, no, brake
fluid leaking down the pedal! And this was a new M/C from Moss (I
think).
When time came to leave, it was raining again, so top was up and the
wipers and lights on. I drove from Poughkeepsie to Newburgh (stopping in
Beacon when it cleared to put the top back down). In Newburgh I needed
to fill up. As I was pulling into the gas station, I noticed the tach
had dropped to zero, but the engine was still running. Then noticed all
the other electrical gauges weren't working either. Pulled in, filled
up, and popped the bonnet. Sure enough, a fuse had blown, taking out the
gauges, turn signals, wipers, and (as I found out later) brake lights.
And I had no spare fuse. Stupid. I also noticed that all my air cleaner
bolts were loose! Out with the wrench, tightened things up, and closed
the bonnet.
As it was 7:30, I figured that having all the running lights on was
safer than having a working tach, I headed home. I had a working speedo
and oil pressure gauge, and a full tank of gas, so if nothing else went
wrong, I'd make it.
The rest of the trip was uneventful. I took mostly highways back to
minimize braking.
So, I am in need of a new or resleeved master cylinder. Who remembers
the company that resleeves these? I have my original M/C in my spares
box which I attempted to disassemble, only to nick the bore trying to
get the secondary piston out. And why don't these new ones last?
But I must say, the number of smiles I got along the way made thw trip
worth it. Including the guy at a stoplight who asked me about the car
and mentioned the Porche 914 he's restoring. Classic! :)
