Bob,
Jack up the rear of the car. Chock one wheel (obligatory cat content).
Hold the drive shaft with one hand and rotate the rim of the free wheel back
and forth. There will be some some movement before the drive shaft rotates.
At the tyre edge the rotation shouldn't be more than a couple of inches of
lash. More than 3 and the diff needs working on.
