Check that you have a decent spark delivered to the right place at about the
right time before modifying all the fuel system.  That still might need
doing, but wait till that fat snappy blue spark is there.  Forget about the
thready wimpy yellow/red spark.

It's also true that depressing the clutch reduces the drag on the starter
motor, but it also puts a lot of pressure on pretty dry thrust washer.  Take
your choice, I guess as to what does the most damage.  Starters are cheap!
