With respect to the first paragraph of 
your post I shall defer to others with
more experience in such matters.

With respect to the pistons, these should
come with the approrpriate rings in the
appropriate grooves right out of the box.

I am assuming all came the same way
with respect to ring order, from top to
bottom.

This would indicate the second ring 
MUST be installed with the surface
marked "top".....this side "up" in it's
groove.
