OK, so you go just under the knock off if you have them.  This is the
backyard mechanic way to get you close enough to drive safely.  It's not
rocket science!

But won't that invoke a certain amount of ackerman? (The changes in
front suspension incurred through the suspension travel.) Plus, if the
string is passing the center of both wheels, you will have a problem
with the knockon/off if you have wire wheels. Has anyone tried those
rotating plates that LBCarCo sells (Gunson?) that you drive over one
with the wheels straight and it shows you how many degrees it rotated?
