Not sure how applicable this is to your situation, but a while back I
created a custom dash for my '71. I took a standard late style padded
dash and stripped it to the metal backing. Did a little metal work to it
give space for some extra gauges in the center. I created a top crash
pad similar to what was used in the earlier cars. At least in this
situation though the pad was not *required* for bolting up the dash to
the car. The dash already had bolts attached directly to it for bolting
up. I did have to replace one due to my modifications - I used something
called an "elevator bolt" I found at Lowes. It's like a carriage bolt
but with a VERY thin, flat head. The crash pad I made used a backing of
1/8" thick aluminum and I attached it to the dash using self tapping screws.
