Josh,

All cars had metal shift can up until '69 or '70 when they switchover to
the vinyl shift gaiter occured as part of the "facelift" interior. Either
will fit, but the gaiter type also used a different shift lever with a
rubber isolator in the shaft that looked like a "D" battery. Old style
shifter should work fine though. Some move over the the gaiter style with 5
speeds to allow more room, but an offset lever will work with the metal
cans too.
