I pinned the column in my '72 because I was getting some
play between the upper and lower portions as I turned the
steering wheel. . The plastic inserts were worn out.
I turned the steering column a bit so that the pins faced somewhere
between the carbs and the wheel well, and was able to drill them
out easily. I replaced the plastic pins with two thin metal roll
pins.
So far, seems to work great. (Just hope I don't head-on a semi.
But of course then the column would be the least of my worries.)
