You guys are thinking of the Insight. It was ugly, with plastic fenders,
aluminum suspension and two seater, with 3 cylinder engine and electric
assist. For 2003 Honda introduced a 4 door Civic Hi-bred. It looks like an
LX Civic with a small wing, aluminum wheels a hi-bred badge and a different
grill opening being the only giveaways that it isn't a basic Civic. MSRP at
about $19500, it is more expensive than the EX Civic. It is available with
stick or CVT transmissions. It is faster off of the line than a basic
Civic, as the electric assist provides 100% torque from 0 RPM. There is no
plugging in for recharging as the motor becomes a generator under low load
and utilizes regenerative braking to charge the battery pack. Functionally,
you give up the fold down rear seatback pass through to the trunk. Don't
look for a huge fuel savings, as a basic LX Civic already gets 38 MPG
highway, with the Hi-bred getting about 45 MPG.
