Thread-topic: replacement brake lines
There is definitely a difference between DOUBLE and BUBBLE flares. Double
flares resemble a funnel and there are two thicknesses of metal in the conical
part. This is a safety measure since a single thickness flare would stretch
the metal very thin. Buy a short piece of brake pipe at NAPA (or somewhere)
and examine the inside of the cone carefully. This'll be a Double flare. I
think you'll see the edge where the material is doubled over near the small
inner point where the cone ends and becomes the tube. Also, the outer end
edge of the cone will be a smooth radius, albeit tiny. DOUBLE flares, if you
make them yourself (easy to do) with a flaring kit, are made in two steps...
first the squashing step with the proper die; then the inversion step using
just the tapered point of the press. BUBBLE flares resemble a bubble and are
made in one step. They require a special bubble flare die. Lots of LBC brake
pipes are 3/16" diameter and a GOOD QUALITY (a must) flare kit usually
includes that size Bubble die. Lotsa Luck!!
