Mom had a '72 Datsun 510 brand new (4-spd). Second gear crunched badly in
the winter time unless we warmed it up first. Before the dealer 'fixed' it, it
wouldn't go into second at all!
To warm up the tranny we just let it idle in neutral for a minute with foot
-off- the clutch pedal, then shift gently for a while.
