well you already know you need to pull the gear box out of the car.
my bet is you have 1 or 2 detent balls out of the first gear synchro and
remaining ball is stuck partially out and will not go back into the hole
..locking it in first gear. all the yanking pulling wacking with a hammer
will not get it to release! you need to dismantle the gear box and
reassemble the first / second gear slider hub assembly. then when you put
the shaft wich controlls that hub back into the box put a thick(by this i
mean there washers of varying thickness ..even at stores with big bins of
them, do not get a washer as thick as the exhaust / intake washers! just do
not install a paper thin one use a bit thicker washer than the real cheap
ones. specific thickness does not seem to matter just the fact it will fit
onto the shaft , that the center hole is near theshaft outside diameter)
washer onto the shaft before you slide it into the main case . the washer
was a BLMC fix for over riding the synchro hub and locking the trans up,
used in many gold seal rebuilt gear boxes. that should fix your problem.

little play, stick intact. No mechanical genius but am assuming its an
engine out, new GB/GB/gear selector rebuild job...in which case she's going
to have to hibernate for a few more months/paychecks :-( Any chance I've
missed something simple (cheap) to check first ?
