"Hey, that's not noise, it's music.............
sweet, mechanical music".
I empathize with the foregoing but man, I
cannot tell you how much more fun the
Frog is to drive with the Datsun gearbox
and I am not talking about the 5 speeds!!
I am referring to the quietness of operation over even the stock helical
gears!! (BTW, there seems to be a difference in operational heat
generated into the cockpit, also.)
A cam belt drive makes a similiar
difference in general engine noise
(now you can really hear "worn" valve gear!!).
I used to overnight in Plattsburgh, NY way
back when I flew for a New York based
regional. The hotel was right under the
Northern departure path (Southern approach path) of PLB AFB. SAC
operated KC-135's, "Buffs" and F111B's
out of there, missions often occurring at
"odd" hours. Ever hear an F111 go a hundred feet overhead at full
after-burner?
Whoa, whoa! Sleep? Yeah, right!!
Our Chief Pilot (lived in PLB) was a retired PLB F111B figher/bomber
jock.
Great guy; could think dead accurately
at twice the speed of sound (not surprising considering the low level
terrain
following 2 element killer missions he flew).
When a few of us mentioned having
our sleep disrupted he'd answer:
"That's not noise, boys, it's the sound of
freedom". Ya know, he was right!! We
accepted the situation from then on in
as switching hotels was out of the question, it seems.
A little investigation by your's
truly uncovered the fact this hotel was in fact, owned by a buddy of our
firm's CEO
and Director of Ops.! But I liked and admired the Chief Pilot and never
mentioned this to others, though I did
share this knowledge with him one night over a beer at the local pub!
LOL! We
"understood" one another!
