This is probably the guy to contact. But
before you begin, have you had the system checked out by a competent
mechanic? Is it the gen. or the voltage
regulator? Proper "grounds", etc.?
Financially the alternator swap is the
cheapist part of going over (about $55.00) adding a few bucks for
mechanical work
and correct electrical hookup: IF
you had the later Spridget already
equipped with an alternator; unfortunately,
you do not and hear is where the bucks
come in to convert the earlier Bugeye
(did mine, years ago).
In your case, to save the "face" of the
earlier gauge (to match the face of the
speedo) you would have to get the
"innards" of your mechancal gauge
converted to electric; Nisonger can do
this for you but it will cost a few bucks.
Of course, you can swap over to the later
matching"black faced" gauges wherein the tach is already electronic;
about $150
for both from Nisonger.
So, by the time your "converted", cost will
about $205.00 for parts plus mechanic's
time (unless you want to go scrounging
in junkyards). This includes going "negative" ground.
Of course, once it is done, it is done and
life with an alternator is much better and
cheaper, in the long run; you can go to
better halogen headlights, upgrade to an
electric fuel pump if you want, install an
upgraded sound system, etc.
