Paul,
The run was very much fun for the most part. The slow climb was
only for 3 or 4 miles out of 75 miles that day. Most of the time I
kept up just fine with everyone because we stayed off the freeway and
average speed was only 40 MPH. On level ground I have plenty of power
and hills at the lower altitudes are really not much of a problem.
Maybe my carbs are just altitude sensitive because of incorrect
adjustment. Wow, S.U.s incorrectly adjusted, who would have
thought... Normally I can keep up with freeway traffic just fine. Of
course with my differerential (4.22) I AM in the higher rpm range to
do this.
As to the smoking. The head was rebuilt by APT and I originally
had the old style o-ring seals on ALL the valves as original. On my
insistance, David reinstalled VW type bronze guides with VW type top
hat seals on the intake valves. I don't remember if I put the o-rings
on these valves additionally. Maybe they have come off the groove, or
maybe something happened to them when I had the valves re-seated a few
months ago due to air leaks. I'll have to pull the valve cover and
inspect and let you know. Mike MacLean-60 Sprite P.S. Are you sure
that the bushes are for the pressed steel rockers and not the forged
steel or sintered rockers?
