The detective sergeant on the case of my Sprite being hit in the
parking lot emailed me to tell me that since they had nothing to go
on, they were not pursuing my case. I emailed her back that I thought
I knew which car had hit mine, that there was matching damage, and
that I had photographs of both plus the license and parking tag
numbers. She emailed right back, pretty upset that the responding
officer had not taken any of that info, even though I had offered it.
The next day, she interviewed the Mustang owner, who admitted that
"something" had happened, but was not sure she had hit my car. I
guess all the little plastic bits strewn on pavement like a bread
crumb trail, along with the dents and scratches in both cars, were
not enough of a clue to her. In any event, she was willing to pay for
damages and did so yesterday evening, in cash. She threw in an extra
$10 for my troubles. She appeared to be a genuinely "nice" person,
though the concept of leaving a note or contacting the parking office
or police after hitting someone's car was totally foreign to her.
The level of thoroughness shown by the det. sgt. was refreshing. She
was downright aggressive, especially after she perceived that her
office had dropped the ball. I've sent a note of thanks to her and am
trying to contact her supervisor to send a similar message.
Thanks for the machiavellian suggestions of how to handle this right
after the incident. It was fun to blow off steam (though some of you
are scary!). Thanks also for the more serious suggestions about
taking photographs and height measurements.
And now for something completely different: The Leonids should be
visible early Sunday morning, sometime between 4:30 am and dawn on
the east coast. This may be the last significant and visible meteor
shower for a couple of decades, maybe longer. Could be a good show,
some predict hundreds to low thousands of "hits" per hour.
