I have an old Chevy van that has old paint, primer & much surface rust, in
about that order. It looks like a big grey palomino. Anyhow, I'd like to make
things better but I have a lot to learn as I'm not a painter and need a bit of
advise as to what's the best way to approach this. >>
George:
1. Earl Scheib, or something better you can live with. Most of these guys
don't do rust damage treatment. A little sandpaper and spray primer would
work wonders.
2. Find a friend whom you can swap services with.
3. I ran across a couple somewhere with a very nice paint job on their
Sprite that they had put on themselves during a class at Vo-Tech.
(Vocational High School). Said they figured they could afford to do it over
4 times for what they would have to pay to have it done well. Turned out,
mostly the first time worked. They had it stripped professionally.
4. Bite the bullet and have a real painter do it. Ask for references and
choose carefully. If you have to shell out big bucks, you deserve your
money's worth. There are still people running "auto painting shops" that
are marginally better than Earl Scheib. They can get the orange peel off
your car, but they will make like it's your fault that it is there in the
first place. Personally, I like the hot rod specialists.
