Like Charles just said look at your fan belt for slippage.
I just experienced this problem just recently.
Every time i went up a steep long hill on the way home
i had to engange the 3rd gear to keep the speed up wchich
meant an rpm of around 4000.
By the time i got to the top of the hill the temp was way up.
I tried everything, even removing the thermostat. The belt
felt tight ok, but when grabbing the fanblade it slipped, i
tightened the belt slightly and it has been ok ever since.
