  I did the same thing except that for the cross-piece I used a piece of
plastic plumbing pipke with one side cut out so it would fit over the top
edge of the battery and stay in place.
  I remember the plastic was easy to cut (and I left the ends fully round
for strength; only cutting the groove as long as the battery) but don't
remember what I cut it with.
