<< Hello,
I am new to this list. I was on for a while a few years back, but left for
personal reasons. I udmit I don't know much about these cars. Anyway, I am
thinking of buying a used Midget here in Montana. I checked out a car
yesterday, and when I tried to remove the valve cover to inspect the valve
train, I stripped the head of the 2 bolts. I was using a metric open end
wrench, and the owner is charging me for the bolts, as he says the bolts are
not metric. All the bolts on foreign cars are metric, aren't they? Are
Midget bolts different? >>
Bob:
Almost all of the bolts on Sprites and Midgets are American Standard Fine
threads. The remaining ones, primarily on the carbs, are Wentworth. The
wrench that should be in your back pocket is a 7/16" open end. If it won't
get you there, you probably shouldn't go.
Aren't you the guy who left the list in a snit a couple years ago ostensibly
because we got off on tangents like cats and rock music (in the past couple
days) without any LBC content. If so, you probably will discover that we
haven't changed all that much; however we also have a lot of people on the
list who know these cars and will give you straight answers. I get the
feeling we may be being "put on" by your question, but that is the answer I
would give a "newbie".
