rear springs 1/2 eliptic

Hi gang:  I was driving the Meejit (RWA '74) last evening and noticed a
scraping noise from the rear over bumps.  Took off the wheels and notice the
tires (175/70) were rubbing on the wheel arch.  Also noticed that the rear
springs are sprung slightly upwards!  (i.e. center higher that the ends, with
the weight of the car on the axel)  I looked through the archives and can't
find any info about if the springs are shot.  Any suggestions?   Thanks for
