Hi, John-
I agree with unintentional bad installation.
That is exactly what happened to me by
error, originally.
All that has to happen inside the dizzy is
the wires to the Pertronix get "caught"
between the mounting plate and body of
of dizzy and chaff through, and there's
your instant "short".
Simply grinding "back" part of the mounting plate (which gives the wires
a little more room) solves this particular problem.
Since I could not get a matching Pertronix
"black" coil locally, I bought up the alleged
failure rate with a tech. rep. when I ordered this coil direct from
Pertronix,
Many reps. are not honest about their
products being possibly somewhat
predjudiced, but this guy admitted the
failure rate of "early" units right off the
bat when I brought the subject up.
He didn't try to hide it, so I tend to believe
him in his statement that the later units
have been improved in these respects.
And, of course, if that were not the case
the failure rate would continue and at
that point, Pertronix might as well close
it's doors, obviously!!
The only other problem I had was Lucas
rotors not being able to carry the juice the
Pertronix is obviously capable of producing, when widening plug gaps in
an attempt to take advantage of this unit's
energy potential. 028" was as far as I
could go without the Pertronix' electrical
energy "splitting" the rotor.
Now, this was in my original Cooper "S"
dizzy of yesterday. We'll see how my
new 43D4 Aldon unit tailored for the blower does, once I install it on
my new
1275 after I break-in the new engine with
my current twin SU set-up for the first
couple of thousand miles.
But, obviously, if I didn't believe in the
Pertronix from my own good experience
with the unit, I wouldn't have asked Aldon
to prepare the dizzy with this unit in place.
Thanx for your feedback, John, which I
am posting on the Spridget List so that
others, also, may have the benefit of
your experience.
It is only by "talking" with each other that
we learn what the other guy knows, and
vice-versa in a program of continuing
education! Thanx, again, guy.

Robert:
I installed a Pertronic ignition inside my distributor 3 years ago. Unit has
worked fine with no problems. Some initial comments from the web indicate
sporadic good Bad results. Attribute them to infant mortality of the
electronic parts or bad installation. As I indicated my has worked with no
problems so far.
