Jamie:

 Porter, in his DIY Restoration of the Midget/Sprite says a good method to 
deal with these seams is to grind them off, up to the point that they are 
rusted, and use a very fine drill bit to wallow out the rust in the crease 
between the fender and the body.  Then take a new seam molding, cut off the 
lower part of the "T" that goes between the seam, and solder it, using a 
torch, back onto the seam.  I think I would treat the seam with phosphoric 
acid to neutralize any rust first, then flux the joint before soldering.  
Unless you just want to grind them off, as you said in your post.  But this 
gives you another option.
