Backlash (Non S&M content!)

I seem to recall that there is a simple (i.e.cheap) repair that can be
done to the diff to reduce backlash.  I belive it involves replacing a
couple of shim washers. Not a proper re-con, but is it worthwhile?
Anyone know about this?
