I found a way to tone down my loud exhaust without touching the exhaust.
Switch from 1.5 roller rockers to stock rockers.
Some time ago I blew out a rocker arm on the roller rockers. The rocker came
loose from the bushing. Until I can get around to fixing it I just installed
a set of stock rockers.
4 to 1 header, 1.5" pipe, and 15" glasspack.
Using a dB meter inside the car, pointing rearward, the exhaust noise was
125 dB at full tilt with the rollers. With the stock rockers it's 90 dB
under same conditions.
I had no idea that the rockers could make that much difference in the sound
of the exhaust. This was the first time I had run this engine with stock
rockers.
