Jeff,
Don't see why not, as the generator is now providing electrical power, and
it is connected to the car body via the engine earth strap.
I understand that this is not a good thing to do intentionally, though, as
an alternator (and presumably a generator too) needs a load (the battery) to
prevent too much voltage getting to the rest of the electrical system.

Should the car continue running even if the ground strap is removed
from the battery? This is a '65 Sprite converted to negative ground.
