To test a genny, unplug both wires, hook up a meter or test bulb to the
large lug and ground, you should have 18 volts coming out the back of
the gen before the reg.
If you have volts, suspect the regulator. It will spark with battery
back feed which can sometimes give false hopes.
I believe brush gear means the brushes and springs that hold them in.
All the *gear* related to the brushes.
