Frank (and list)- Thanks for the instructions. But that wasn't it. It turned out to be a bad voltage regulator, probably the shunt resistor. I scrounged around in the boxes for a spare, and found 4... 3 made by "You-Know-Who" and 1 with a Motorcraft branding. Guess which one worked.
