Distributor

I'm trying to refit the distributor in this 1500 engine.  First, I placed
the little gear down in there by the cam.  Then I bolted the base to the
engine.  Then, I tried to put the distributor back in place.  No matter
which position I try, the distributor will not go in all the way.  It lacks
about 1/8 inch before the bolt can be tightened to hold it in place.  What
am I doing wrong?  Thanks in advance...
