Exhaust over or under axle

Because my ears hurt after driving my sprite more than
a couple of miles, I was reading through the archives
trying to decide on what kind of muffler I want.  I
found one post that claimed that routing exhaust over
the rear axle made it seem much louder inside the car.
 Can anyone substantiate this?  

It seems much better (maintenance-wise) to go over the
axle, but now I'm not sure.
