My nickname when I was growing up was "Gilroy". All my friends had
nicknames
but I was the only one whose nickname was his last name. So many people
called
me Gilroy that there were people who did not know my first name. One guy I
had
known for 7 years called my parents house looking for me and got all
flustered
when my sister answered and he realized he did not know my first name. He
told my sister "I am looking for your brother, you know, Gilroy, but I
don't
know his first name". Years later when I meet my wife people were still
calling me Gilroy. Even my wife called me Gilroy. After about 3 years
of marriage she finally started to use my first name. Kind of funny.
