Amp guage

Thanks to all the helpful folk with suggestions about my running
difficulties.  Ok, I've found a cause for my Sprite running rough that I
don't understand.  Why does disconnecting the wire running from the
alternator to the amp guage in the dash cause the engine to run better?
When I reconnect it, you can here the engine run down and start coughing.
