I'm coming in late here, but I assume you're talking about importing to the
US. (Unless it's that's little island off Labrador that is part of France.)

see:
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/can9901.htm
For Big Brother's safety requirements (specific to Canada - drop the
can9901 bit for general rules)

For customs go to:
 http://www.customs.gov/impoexpo/impoexpo.htm
Click on "Informal entries..etc." then "importing a car"

I defy anybody to come up with useful data on the web concerning the smog
issues of vehicle import.

Oh, and I'm back; not that anybody likely missed me. Note the subtle change
in my e-mail address. The old one still works, but the recipient of the
mail is no longer me. It gets forwarded but takes a long time. The last few
weeks have been strange indeed, but all is well. I managed to drive the
Midget yesterday for the first time in weeks, it was wonderful therapy.

Hey Alan - I lost your address in the address/computer switch - I'll be in
Rhode Island next week.

What was the "pig thread?"

One problem. If they do a "spot check", they will not be able to find any
record of the car crossing from the U.S. into Canada.

You are forgetting that they record in a computer every liscense number
that
comes across the border, either direction. They know exactly what day and
time you came through.

Been there, done that. I was lucky they only sent me back and didn't lock
me
up.
