Frank,
it's not made of that. In fact the Morris Minor fuel gauge
works in a very acceptable manner in my A40 Mk1 with a 
fuel gauge from a Mini in place of the old rectangular
thing at the bottom of the trapezoid speedo.

The old fuel gauge was broken anyway.
