You can clean them with soap and water, just don't scrub them hard witha
brush or force high pressure water through them.  
I wouldn't experiment with the oil.  The filtering and the flow capacity
of the filter both depend on this and I think if you are a little off on
the viscosity, you will sacrifice one or the other.
When you oil them, only give them enough oil, don't overoil.
