why do we need this valve?

PCV= Positive Crankcase Ventilation.
Positive being the key word.
Your way just keeps the pressure equal
The best way for 1275s to vent is to have a valve (one way)taken off the
intake manifold where there is vacuum. Run a hose from the intake via a
valve, to the crankcase. This creates a negative pressure in the
crankcase thus positivly venting it.
To see if your engine has negative pressure, remove the oil filler cap,
place your palm over it, you should feel a slight suction. With out a
valve you will have enough suction to suck your hand in (or suck out all
your oil and dump it into the intake resulting in a smoke screen when
you drive.
This is my simple explaination, others may have a more indepth answer.
