odd running today

After starting and running beautifully all summer, the little guy 
began acting up today:  hard to start, chugging in first gear off the 
line, had to race the engine getting going.  And then after a while 
all was fine, as far as I could tell.  Started fine, ran fine.  Could 
this be symptomatic of something--or is he just recognizing the 
coming of winter?  Any of you run into this before?  Very odd.
