New charging woes!

So, anyone want to help me with an alternator that's not charging?  What
should I check first?  ( the alternator light doesn't come on when in the
on postion, though it used to!! If I start the car, it's still out, AND I
still only read 12v off the battery, so it's obviously not getting juice!)
