Hi Folks,

First off, many thanks for the suggestions and encouragement.

To recap: Big clunking noise from the back when taking foot off the gas.

The suggestions:

1. Wire wheels not tightened down enough.
2. Splines not greased up enough.
3. Broken leaf springs.
4. Bad shocks.
5. Bad leaf spring bushings.
6. Loose brake parts.
7. Loose brake back plate.
8. Bad differential.

We can discount #1 and 2.
 # 3 is a good one because one of the leaf springs is broken!
However, I'm starting to think it's a worn differential - read on:

I jacked the back up and, with the car in 1st gear, grabbed the back wheel
like a steering wheel and yanked it like I"m changing directions. There
was a fair amount of slop and an accompanying "clonk" when changing
direction. The same thing happened when I done this to the other back
wheel.
OK, so then I jacked up my other Midget (1500 with steel wheels) - this is
why you folks need two MG's - and tried the same thing. Well, I got the
same amount of "slop" but definitely no clonking.

Has this narrowed it down? I tried rocking the car, in1st gear, from side
to side, car on the ground of course - not much happened. Rocking it
forward and backward gave a clonking noise, seemed from both wheels.

What next? Thanks, guys. Adrian
