Greg,

I have a smoothcase transmission that I had rebuilt from a rusted piece of
junk by a firm in CT call Quantum Mechanics. The price a year and a half ago
was $ 475.00 if everything had to be rebuilt or he would exchange yours for
one of his already rebuilts for the same price. Mine came back as new all
painted and ready for install and refill with oil. The turn around was only
a couple of weeks. He also does ribcase trannies. The exchange is for like
transmissions.

Now for your transmission. Do you have to double clutch from first to second
and third to second or only on the downshift ? Because I have to double
clutch on the down shift from third to second even on my fresh transmission.
First is useless unless the car is at a complete stop.

I know there is a lot of talk on this list of the ribcase being better and 5
speed conversions being great. To each his own. They are your cars make them
enjoyable for you. I would just like to put in a plug for my 948 and
smoothcase transmission. Top speed is only 80 mph with the 4.22 rearend. But
it's still a major blast. I own two 948 cars both with their original
smoothcase transmissions.

It's a legend that these transmissions can't be rebuilt. Quantum Mechanics
is doing it. Maybe not forever, but they are still doing them. I picked up a
spare smoothcase and am gonig to have it rebuilt for an insurance policy. If
you enjoy your car's performance, get your original rebuilt.
