Thanks to Ulix and Chris for suggesting a propane torch. I ended up taking
the housing to the BBQ and grilling the sucker. The plastic charred and
hardened and I was able to unscrew it while hot with the end of a
screwdriver - it came out leaving the housing threads lovely and clean.
Don't try this inside the house - the plastic gives off a horror stench
(remember burning toy soldiers!)
Anyway, let this be a lesson to those with the original plastic plug - a
new only costs $3 from VB (or about $10 for a brass one that will last to
the next Stone Age)

Happy Motoring, Adrian
