I had the axles out this weekend and installed new seals. I have never
disassembled the rear hubs and bearings and need some advice regardig the
following:
On the right, the hub nut is tightened such that about one or two threads
are visible out of the nut - looks good.
On the left, the hub nut is only on a couple of turns, no threads
protrude, and then the nut is WELDED ON!! @$%#@^%
The brg. has (of course) significant play on that side. I wonder what
caused the DPO or probably his "mechanic" to do this? Suggestions?
Did they just mess up the threads, crossthread the nut on there as far as
they could and then weld it? Doesn't sound very plausible. They could
have saved the threads with a thread file. They put on four weld spots
and ground them down.

I have reassembled the car like this, but would like suggestions of what
awaits me when I grind the nut off. Does this point to any common problem
with the rear axle housing? i.e. do I need a new axle housing?

Thanks,
