A while back, someone ran a listing of 0-60 mph times for MGAs and Bs.
Someone else made a crack about Spridget speeds (someting like "And we're
still waiting on that guy in the Midget to come in.") There was even a
serious comment that typical Spridgets times are over 20 seconds!
I thought that surely mine could do better and decided to run some time
trials. I have a 1965 Austin-Healey MkIII Sprite that has a 1275 cc engine.
The car is otherwise stock. I conducted 4 runs (2 each way) down a deserted
stretch of uncompleted road that is fairly level and very straight. I
checked my speed against a friend's Z-car whom we know is acurate through
GPS navigation. I did nothing to lighten the car (trunk contained the
spare, about 20 lbs of tools and fluids, and some jackets and caps). I even
ate lunch before the trials. Tire pressure is 29 lbs all around. Engine is
in need of a tune (runs rich and points need adjusting).
Results: uphill:15 & 13; downhill: 11 &10 seconds
Average: 12.25 seconds 0 to 60 mph
HA!
