You are right!  There is a difference in the two pieces.  In the attached
pic, the right end is flat for about one inch and the other end is flat for
about two inches.  I inspected my Spit and found the longer flat end is at
the center console support and the shorter flat end is at the A-Pillar.
Both ends sit on top of the brackets with a small bolt and nut securing the
crash pad to the car.

My factory parts book shows different part numbers for the left and right,
and in the drawing, they seem to get thinner on the outer end.  But the ones
on my car look pretty symmetrical.
