I tend to carry heater hose, hose clamps, battery jumper cables, four new plugs, cap, rotor, one spark plug wire, along with oil and coolant. That, plus a few basic tools all tucked into a canvas tool bag in the trunk/boot. It doesn't take up a lot of space, but it will pretty much take care of anything I run into on the road to get me home or to a parts store.
