rack mounts

I have the poly steering rack mounts and the solid aluminum mounts. Any pros
and cons? I believe I have to discard the nylon button and cover the hole with
tape to use the solid aluminum mounts. Is that correct? What is the function
of the nylon button? I suspect it keeps the rack from rubbing on the top of
the tube.
