welding tricks

I have a lower control arm, that has a gap in the tube, where the bushings
fits. See the last pic at, http://ljvaughan.homestead.com/lower.html
Can I weld the gap at a point where it will close the gap? Like if I hit it at
the base, will the heat make the gap close?
