An alternator, due to it's wiring, is normally a trickle leak to the
battery. That's why many an alternator equipped car that sits over the
winter will have a dead battery come spring.

If the battery is extremely weak, as you're description makes your
sound, this slight leak could well be enough to show up on a meter
across the battery terminals.

It also sounds like the battery is not taking a charge. If so, this
can sometimes cause the dashboard light to glow.
