My MK IV parts book has 12 pages of different seats! I think swapping the seat
frames
or upholstery was one of their favorite ways of tweaking the car for different
markets and
model years. (Plus the all the various auto safety regulations...)

The seats and seat covers were made by specialist subcontractors (for example,
my original molded latex seat base foams say "Dunlop" on them). It was
pretty easy for them to whip up some seats with different material.

BTW, I got a full set of repro replacement seat covers and foams from Rimmer a
couple
of years ago. I was pretty happy with the slipcovers and seat back foam, but
the repro seat base foam was way too soft and wimpy, and the rebuilt seats
have really poor hip support. It would be fantastic to get original-spec moded
latex foam seat bases, but the material and tooling cost would make them really
expensive :-(
