Using a test light or meter, have you checked that brown wire from the 
ignition switch to the starter solenoid (with the starter disconnected of 
course) and with the key being switched on and off a lot?  It should be 
very reliable, but the switches are also fairly prone to self destruction 
internally.

If it's good, time to bench test that starter solenoid.  See that it's 
reliably giving you an output when it's activated.  Failing that, go after 
the starter.  You can test the integrity of the starter by hooking up an 
ohmmeter (part of your multipmeter) or continuity checker between the case 
and the main terminal on the starter and then manually turn the armature a 
full 360 slowly.  Look for regular needle action.  If you see it drop at 
one point during the rotation, then you might have a bad field on the 
armature.
